After going to school and devoting most of our productive years to working, many of us look forward to the day we will retire and we are excited about it. Yes, retirement sounds easy and exciting, but it is a little more complicated than we always think that it will be.

Working gives us the feeling that we are productive and contributing our own quota to the industry that we find ourselves in. But when it’s time to make our transition to retirement, we get confused even though we have been looking forward to it.

We can make the transition easier by creating happiness and making the effort to rediscover ourselves as a person who no longer takes the centre stage. For some of us, this may be a very difficult time because we will experience many changes such as loss of lifelong friends, change of address, adapting to a new financial reality, and loss of a structured life.

When we learn to create our own happiness, retirement will give us the gift of time, the ability to explore new ways to live our lives, and new avenues for social interactions.
